Job Description:

Product Development Director.  This is a search within a mature startup, which is a vertically integrated manufacturer of consumer products headquartered in Los Angeles.  This is a newly created position, is focused on producing next-generation products, and will report directly to the COO of the company.  If you want to lead NPI for a rapidly expanding, yet established global organization this could be a good fit for you. 

Typical project lengths are in the 6 months to 1 year range, with quality and speed being the driving KPI’s. Experience in foam and/or plastic injection molding, metals, die casting, and/or tubular steel would be ideal.  You will need experience managing both internal and external design centers, with a preference toward external management.  Plan on focusing on 6 product families, which could include 2 models, or 1 model with 20 variants.  For reference, plan on roughly 1,000 active SKU’s, with 300 others which are passive.

Essential functions and responsibilities include:

  • Develop a strategy that supports execution of NPI in a timely fashion (speed to market) while maintaining accountability to the corporate product development or transfer processes
  • Centralize control and ensure global compliance for process and NPI engineering operations
  • Lead design for manufacturing reviews. Best practices and lessons learned feedback to design; influence manufacturability in design
  • Close collaboration with all manufacturing facilities and third party designers to support continuous improvement
  • Controls CapEx spending for operations relating to new products
  • Create & execute a NPI Process for all new products, with defined milestones and communications plans to all internal and external partners
  • Accountable for design control deliverables for the introduction of new products – deliverables such as assembly process methodology, and product and process risk assessments
  • Lead project teams to meet targets for quality, delivery & other associated measures
  • Develop designs utilizing suitable commercial components that are able to operate reliably in the space radiation environment

Required Experience & Parameters:

         BS/BA in a technical or related field

         10+ years’ progressive experience in transitioning NPI into production

         5-10+ years’ management responsibility (direct or matrixed)

         Ability to travel 15-25% annually

         Proven examples of product development

         Ability to take the initiative and work in a self-directed environment with remote team members

         Proven experience of having overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, managing expense priorities, and recommending, and implementing change
